This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers To view it, click here I WANT RO READDDDDDDDDDDDD IT Fantasy with lesbian dragons is all I ever wanted. I rewrote my review. Before I get into my actual review of the book I want to add one little thing I am sick and tired of adults posting reviews about how this book made their children uncomfortable and that they think children should be protected from the disease that is the LGBTQ community They paint their comments and reviews like actual reviews of this book, but all they are doing is trying to cover up their homophobic ideals as an opinion that is actually worth anyone s time Being LGBTQ I rewrote my review. Before I get into my actual review of the book I want to add one little thing I paint their comments and reviews like actual reviews of this book, but all they are doing is trying to cover up their homophobic ideals as an opinion that is actually worth anyone s time Being LGBTQ isn t disgusting, and you can t protect your children from something that isn t something they should be protected from I knew I liked girls when I was 8 years old, I didn t know what homosexual meant, I didn t know what gay or lesbian meant I was an 8 year old child that kissed my best friend and was bullied because of it My child brain told me that the reason everyone hated me was because I kissed a girl, so I spent the next several years burying myself so deep in denial that I convinced myself I liked boys all that did was throw me into one abusive relationship after another It took me until I was 17 years old to realize I did like girls, it took me another year to stop being disgusted with myself I was a protected child, it didn t protect me from anything, it just made me hate myself, and then it made me hate my parents The only thing I hated about this book was what was done to Tsunami She did not feel like Tsunami to me at all, and just didn t act like herself whatsoever I was greatly disappointed by what was done with her Honestly Sutherland did not need to put Tsunami and Turtle in this book at all They weren t used, they didn t do anything, and they weren t written like they should have been I mean we get to see them so little that they don t even feel like real characters in this book If they hadn t been put into this novel then I would have adored it because I love Sundew But Tsunami is my baby, and what Sutherland did with her just ruined this entire book for me Okay I feel like my original review of this book was way to harsh Will I up the rating Nope, it still gets 2.5 stars from me But I am rewriting some of my review because I did love some parts of this book I loved Sundew and Willow s relationship, I loved Leafwing culture, I loved Hazel, and Bumblee is just the best little babu Now please don t think I loved Sundew being gay because I want to jump on the hype train I loved that aspect of the book because it told me and my girlfriend that it is okay to be who we are Neither of us have told our parents about our relationship because we are terrified of how they would react But this book gave us the courage to come clean about we we are, and that we love each other. And hey if you are homophobic I just want to say that you are wrong and you don t have a single right to feel the way you do So jump in a hole and stay there EDIT Looking back at this a few months later, I realized that I sound a lotheated than I probably should However, I still stand behind my review Please look at the context before you claim I disliked it simply because it had a lesbian in it I gave several reasons as to why the book was poorly executed If you would like to ask about my stance, please do so cordially.2.3 stars Let me start off by saying I love this series The characters are unique and fun, likewise with the stories EDIT Looking back at this a few months later, I realized that I sound a lotheated than I probably should However, I still stand behind my review Please look at the context before you claim I disliked it simply because it had a lesbian in it I gave several reasons as to why the book was poorly executed If you would like to ask about my stance, please do so cordially.2.3 stars Let me start off by saying I love this series The characters are unique and fun, likewise with the stories themselves The few who have seen my previous reviews know that I often give the books a raving five stars However, with that said, I can confidently say that I have never before been so disappointed by a book in my life Let me just lay down the backdrop In the previous books, we were given fantastic escapes, lovely characters, and fascinating stories where dragons were fleeing prisons, stealing sacred artifacts, and hiding from the evil law of the land They really gripped you and kept you reading Then this book came along, and we got some plants Instead of daring escapes, we got wandering around in a jungle Instead of fascinating stories, we got some filler and approximately two plot twists And, on top of it all, instead of a fun band of heroes to follow, we were stuck with flat old Sundew, whilst the others were thrown under a bus. But, let s give Sundew the benefit of the doubt I mean, she s a strong willed, independent female Oh, and she s lesbian. This trope has quickly become an aggravating clich in our culture today Not to mention the fact that practically EVERY OTHER CHARACTER IN THIS SERIES ALREADY HAS A LOVE INTEREST I mean, really, could we please have just one dragon who s not mooning over someone or other Frankly, I felt betrayed As a Christian, I believe homosexuality to be a sin Does that mean I hate all those who practice it No However, it does mean that having it blatantly shoved into a book for no reason other than to lookwith the times feels like a slap in the face Especially since the author is constantly reminding you that oh yeah, she s the only dragon for her and oh look how cute they are together, and only the annoying dragons give a rip about their relationship Sundew quickly became just a puddle of mush Her thought process throughout the book went in circles Willow s the only dragon for me My mom makes me so mad The HiveWings make me so mad In short, she just felt mad all the time It made for a very boring character in general Sutherland s constant reminder of the fact that the two dragons were, in fact, going to get married was only slightly subtler than a kick in the pants The message I heard sounded like I know I m angering about 50% of my readership, but this is happening, and there s nothing they can do to stop it Just accept it I get enough of that in practically every other outlet must I read about it in a middle grade novel about dragons Putting aside just how weird the relationship felt, it just added a layer of awkwardness to everything, not to mention the complete unnecessity of it all Sure, we got to see a different side of Sundew, but it didn t add much to the story Not to mention the fact that Willow the love interest came off dull and annoying, basically another Sunny clone I mean, why would Sundew, of all characters, be disappointed by the fact that Willow didn t introduce Dew to her father as her girlfriend And that s just Sundew s problem The rest of the characters save Cricket, to an extent were barely heard during the entire novel Plus, the new characters were stock and bland Just a bunch of grumpy soldiers, which sound just like Skywings In short, we got no character development whatsoever. We haven t even talked about the plot I mean, how many times must we read about some daring escape from a carnivorous plant These were boring and just felt like filler Seriously, there were two just within a few paragraphs of each other There was no plot tension whatsoever, and it only got interesting near the end The plot moved about as fast as some of those plant conversations we had to listen in on.So, in conclusion to my ill written rant, I ll pose a question to Mrs Sutherland was one political statement worth the quality of her writing and the alienation of hundreds of readers tui sutherland feeding me gay dragonsme thank you for saving my life Guys, I found it A love story worse than Twilight. The book started okay, but about a third of the way through, it turns out the main character, a girl dragon, has a girlfriend who is her one true love I have some beliefs that mean I don t think that sort of relationship should be promoted, so this bothered me, especially since so much of the book was about it.Now, not only does she have a girlfriend, but in a flashback, we find out it was love at first sight when Sundew was TWO YEARS OLD I kn Guys, I found it A love story worse than was love at first sight when Sundew was TWO YEARS OLD I know dragons age faster than humans, but two is still way too young for love at first sight, and it seems like the other dragon was older too Not only that, this dragon sparkled like a Twilight vampire I m not joking She s sparkly in the flashback The author goes to great extents to normalize gay dragons, to the point no one seems that upset about it, other than a couple glares Sundew was supposed to marry another dragon because she and he share certain powers The fact that Sundew is lesbian should cause some issue because, logically, that means she wouldn t be passing on her genetics, which is apparently a big enough deal that she d have been put in a forced marriage to produce little dragons that talk to plants This fact that everyone s plan for breeding dragons is ruined isn t mentioned, even though it should have caused a huge blow up.The writing is also somewhat annoying The romance is a huge focus of the storyline, and the romantic interest, Willow, has no real personality, other than being the opposite of the main character Normally, Tui s characters are interesting, but Willow s pretty flat It s obvious that, so far, her only role in the storyline is Sundew s girlfriend While Cricket is an interesting character and is often doing things, Willow would have no real role without Sundew. And then the third thing These dragons keep walking through this dragon eating poison jungle I don t remember anyone mentioning why they can t simply climb a tall tree, then fly over the jungle Did dragon wings somehow stop working along with dragon magic Overall, I don t see why pre teens should have books that are full of romance, no matter what gender the characters are Kids don t read books about dragons because they want dragons touching claws and tails and wings Romance shouldn t be a big focus of stories geared toward this age group, especially stories that are supposed to be about adventure and dragons.I miss the original series That had a lotaction and fun in it, and the romance wasn t nearly as much of a focus It seems to be going downhill badly So this was boring.I went into this with such high hopes and I think, with how much the plot got derailed for romance, I kinda want to lower the ratings on the other Wings of Fire books too because this has been a consistent problem with this series, and I m sick of it.Sundew was an amazing character but, for whatever reason, her character development got completely swept aside as soon as her love life came in to play which makes no sense at all She s a strong and calculating dragon She unders So this was boring.I went into this with such high hopes and I think, with how much the plot got derailed for romance, I reason, her character development got completely swept aside as soon as her love life came in to play which makes no sense at all She s a strong and calculating dragon She understood risks and how to prepare for basically anything, view spoiler yet for whatever reason in this story she thought it was OK to take a freaking baby dragonet into the horrible dark depths of the jungle where she was almost eaten hide spoiler Romance shouldn t have caused her to be an angry idiot, and yet it did, because as soon as her love interest is introduced, Sundew changed Why Why couldn t she be the strong dragon she was in Hive Queen and STILL be in a romantic relationship It s like Tui can t comprehend a strong female character in a romantic relationship who would still be just as calculating and intelligent as before AND a loving partner With they way this was written, it didn t matter who Sundew dated, because the romance issue would have persisted. The plot hiccuped a lot We got a lot of flashbacks with Sundew, but they felt somewhat out of place so that when we found out these huge revelations about either her love interest or other mega important things, they felt unimportant in the grand scheme of things because Sundew was busy daydreaming or not focused on what was going on or being ridiculously angry. There also felt to be very little stakes in this The ending had a lot of big things happening, but all of the major stuff that had been built up over the last two books happened to all the characters off page, so it didn t really matter because they weren t the main ones in the story because we were off with Sundew legitimately doing nothing.I can say for sure, unless the writing of the plot gets better, I m not preordering anyof these after the Oasis novel Tui Sutherland really needs to work on her romance writing spoiler it s pretty bad and work onhigh stakes for her plots if she s going to try to make something as big as what s leading up to in this series. This could have been a phenomenal story about the effects of war, genocide, and how one comes back from that Willow proved you could Sundew proved you could, if we re to take any of her development seriously from the other two books, and yet Sundew takes such a big step backwards in this that any hope for a compelling plot of dragon versus dragon and trying to understand why good people do bad things is now completely gone.As of now, I am officially DNFing this story, as theI think of it, the less it appeals to me Sundew could have been great if Sundew had acted the same as she was in Hive Queen But she was worse than she ever behaved in any of the previous books, and so her story flopped If Sutherland had made this book about Willow, it would have beencompelling because at least Willow was a good character, and maybe then the romance wouldn t have overridden the story to where it detracted time from the plot Fluffy romance is great for some, but it s not what I signed up for when I started this series Give me the rough, hardened character of Sundew with her gentle, firm girlfriend bff and decrease the amount of time spent on flashbacks, and this would have been a solid 4 star book. And if you like this book, no sarcasm comes from me when I say this I m glad This is a beautiful world with amazing dragons, a diverse cast of characters with mental illness and relationships I wish I liked itI really, really do, but I m sick and tired of series getting dragged out because they make money and authors being too afraid to do gritty topics with Middle Grade and YA I heard this on audio during my holidays in India and loved it Excellent book Highly recommended.
